The challenge was: show the trash in an aesthetic way! Challenge accepted! We took our 35mm adapter and a 50mm fix-focus lens and started shooting. The weather was not brilliant but some haze in the morning enabled us to make interesting shots with a soft light. The 50mm lens revealed to be a good choice for the place. The aperture of 1.6 steps gives a wonderful narrow depth of field that helps to give a nice look even to green trashcans. Of course the handling is different from normal lenses and every shot has to be well thought and prepared. The follow focus helped a lot to adjust the focus even during a shot.

Shooting the interview was a little bit more tricky because of the wind, but some filtering during postproduction helped to keep both the authenticity and the quality of the shot.

At the same time we tried to make the post of that video with the often criticized FinalCut Pro X. Indeed a lot of things have changed since the “old” Final Cut Pro and it needs some open mind to accept that some things are simply different. But that doesn’t mean, that these are modifications are bad. After some time, the editing was done pretty fast, with some color-correction and sound-editing. The integration of Apples’s Motion is even better than before and I was surprised by the stability of the software. Still I believe that there’s some way to go until it can convince professionals.
